Abstract

The UK, Ireland, and the Netherlands have experienced a stormy fall and winter season, which can be attributed to the jet stream. Forecasters from the UK Met Office, Met Eireann, and the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute have already named 10 Atlantic storms this year, with seven months still to go. The jet stream, a narrow band of strong winds in the upper atmosphere, has directed these storms towards the UK and Ireland. The record of named storms is too short to determine any trends related to climate change, and the naming conventions for Atlantic storms are based on potential impacts rather than structure and strength. The UK's small size and location make it particularly susceptible to changes in the jet stream. [Extracted from the article]
