Abstract

The article reports on the signing of a treaty establishing a confederation between Niger, Mali, and Burkina Faso, marking their exit from the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS). The confederation, known as the Confederation of Sahel States (AES), aims to promote greater integration and cooperation among the three countries. The decision to leave ECOWAS was influenced by accusations of Paris manipulating the bloc and insufficient support for anti-jihadist efforts. The AES has also turned to Russia, Turkey, and Iran as their new partners, expelling French troops. The article also mentions plans to establish a regional parliament for the AES. Additionally, Burkina Faso's junta leader accused Côte d'Ivoire and Benin of planning to destabilize his country, while Benin attributed militant attacks to fighters from Burkina Faso and Niger.
