Abstract

The article explores the representation of alluvial gold and placer mining in early modern art and thought, focusing on Jan Gossaert's painting of Danae and Jan Sadeler I's print of America. It discusses how these artworks influenced European views on exploration of the Americas, ecological thinking, and colonial policies related to destructive mining techniques; andd analyzes the discourse on gold sand and placer mining, and examines the conceptualization of alluvial gold and placer mining.
