Abstract

In April 2024, the UK experienced below-average sea-level pressure, resulting in a month of two distinct halves. The first half was characterized by unsettled weather with bands of rain and mild nights, while the second half saw drier but colder conditions. Overall, mean temperatures were close to average, although southern parts had positive anomalies due to cloudy and mild nights. The month was wet, with the UK recording 155% of its long-term average monthly rainfall. Scotland and northern England were particularly affected, with Edinburgh experiencing the second wettest April on record. Additionally, there was a lack of sunshine, with the UK recording only 79% of the average. The month began with disturbed, cyclonic conditions, bringing rain and sometimes snow to Scotland. Strong southerly winds and heavy rain occurred on the 6th, and flooding was observed along some coasts. A warm front brought rain on the 10th, followed by damp and drizzly conditions in western coastal areas. A cooler air mass arrived on the 14th, and a deep depression on the 15th brought stormy and cold weather, including damaging gusts of wind, hail, thunder, and snow on high ground. Chilly and showery weather persisted until the 19th, followed by a quieter spell from the 20th. Arctic air affected many areas from the 24th, bringing showers and wintry conditions in Scotland.
