Abstract
The ocean has been absorbing carbon dioxide from human activities, which helps slow down global warming. However, scientists are now considering ways to increase the ocean's capacity to take up carbon as the time to reduce carbon emissions is running out. This could involve manipulating the ocean's chemistry and biology, but there are challenges such as the lack of baseline data and concerns about environmental impacts. Two potential methods discussed are seaweed farming and ocean iron fertilization, both of which have pros and cons that need further study. Other carbon dioxide removal methods include artificial upwelling and downwelling, enhanced rock weathering, electrochemical alkalinity enhancement, and direct ocean capture. Each method has its own challenges and unknown environmental impacts, but a combination of approaches may be necessary for successful carbon dioxide removal. [Extracted from the article]
