Abstract

Looking for a more trustworthy alternative, Suzana Herculano-Houzel, a neuroanatomist at Vanderbilt University, turned to a different measure: the density of neurons in the cortex, the wrinkly outer brain area critical to most intelligence-related tasks. Experts welcome new neuron-density data, but say findings are premature Was I Tyrannosaurus rex i as smart as a baboon? Modern birds are related to extinct theropods - a group of carnivorous dinosaurs that included I T. rex i - so Herculano-Houzel wanted to see whether she could use some comparative anatomy tricks to estimate the neuronal density of dinos.
