Abstract
In 1831, the Zavaritskii volcano in the Kuril Islands erupted, causing a climate-altering event that led to crop failures and famines in India and Japan. This eruption was identified through geochemical clues found in ice cores, which revealed sulfur isotopes and ash shards dating back to 1831. The discovery of the Zavaritskii volcano as the culprit sheds light on the impact of high-latitude eruptions on global climate and serves as a cautionary tale for future volcanic events.
