Abstract

The article focuses on the potential Earth impact of asteroid 2024 YR4 in 2032, which currently has a 2.3% chance of collision according to NASA, surpassing the 1% reporting threshold to international planetary defense authorities. Measuring between 130 and 300 feet across, 2024 YR4 is classified as a near-Earth object (NEO) and ranks a three on the Torino Scale, indicating a risk of localized destruction rather than global catastrophe. Discovered by the Asteroid Terrestrial-Impact Last Alert System (ATLAS) telescope, the asteroid is being closely monitored by NASA, the International Asteroid Warning Network (IAWN), and other agencies, with further observations planned using the James Webb Space Telescope. In the event of a confirmed threat, mitigation strategies include evacuation, sheltering, and potential deflection, as demonstrated by NASA’s successful 2022 Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) mission.
