Abstract
The article focuses on a new study linking Arctic ice melt to extreme summer weather in Europe through a chain of oceanic and atmospheric changes. It explains how freshwater from melting Arctic ice accumulates in the North Atlantic, creating a "cold blob" that sharpens temperature boundaries, intensifies winter storms, and shifts the North Atlantic Current northward. This shift deflects the jet stream, allowing high-pressure systems to cause prolonged hot, dry conditions over Europe. The study suggests that monitoring Arctic freshwater levels in winter could help predict extreme European heat waves months to years in advance.
