Abstract
This article examines leadership development within higher education in the context of transitioning to a knowledge-based economy (KBE), using Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030 as a case study. It presents a theoretically grounded framework derived from qualitative interviews with academic leaders and industry experts, highlighting three key dimensions of leadership in academia: the evolution of leadership attributes, strategic leadership influence, and collective leadership practices. The study emphasizes the importance of culturally informed, distributed leadership models that align with national transformation programs to enhance higher education's contribution to economic diversification and innovation. Findings suggest that effective leadership in this sector requires nurturing talent pipelines, fostering collaborative environments, and strategically managing internal and external challenges to support the broader goals of a knowledge-based economy.
