Abstract
This article systematically reviews the concept of willingness to pay (WTP) for community-based health insurance (CBHI) and its implications for healthcare financing and accessibility, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. Using the antecedents, decisions and outcomes (ADO) and theories, contexts and methods (TCM) frameworks, it synthesizes empirical studies to identify factors influencing WTP, such as socio-economic status, education, health literacy, and geographic context, while highlighting gaps like limited longitudinal data and insufficient evaluation of policy interventions. The review underscores the importance of tailored policy measures—including subsidies, educational programs, and integration with existing healthcare systems—to enhance CBHI sustainability and equitable access. These findings offer valuable insights for policymakers and researchers aiming to design effective, inclusive CBHI schemes that address diverse population needs.
