Abstract

Constantin Ardeleanu's book "Steamboat Modernity: Travel, Transport, and Social Transformation on the Lower Danube, 1830–1860" explores the impact of steamships on the lower Danube in the mid-nineteenth century. The introduction of steamships connected Vienna to Istanbul and reshaped cities and towns along the river, fostering new forms of local entrepreneurship and global market connections. Ardeleanu's research highlights the diverse travelers on these steamboats and the political, economic, and social implications of steam travel in the region, shedding light on the intersection of modernization, commerce, and identity along the Danube.
