Abstract

The article focuses on redefining inclusion within workplace diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) efforts by emphasizing social inclusion as a relational process occurring in everyday interactions within social systems. It argues that universal notions of inclusion overlook unequal lived experiences and that social inclusion requires building meaningful human relations across lines of social identity and privilege. The author proposes reimagining human resource development (HRD) education to prepare individuals to navigate and foster socially inclusive workplaces through critical reflection, empathy, and relationship-building skills. This approach highlights the importance of addressing social injustice at the interpersonal level, beyond policies and structures, to create equitable and authentic participation for all employees.
