Abstract

A recent study conducted in Varese, Italy, examined the labor market and health effects of a non-contributory long-term unemployment (LTU) benefit targeted at middle-aged disadvantaged workers. The study found that men who were eligible for the benefit experienced a reduction in injury hospitalizations by 12.9% and a 2 percentage points drop in the probability of a mental health diagnosis. However, these effects were not significant for women. The research highlights the role of long-term unemployment benefits in protecting the physical and mental health of middle-aged, low-educated workers who face disadvantages in the labor market.
