Abstract
The article focuses on research into the persistent gender wage gap, analyzing Canadian labor market data from 1997 to 2018 across 40 job categories. It finds that increasing the proportion of women in an occupation helps close the wage gap up to a "tipping point" of about 14% female representation, after which progress slows significantly. This phenomenon aligns with Rosabeth Moss Kanter’s concept of tokenism, where early gains are driven by visibility and organizational pressure, but efforts may wane once a critical mass is reached, creating a "false summit" illusion of equity. The study emphasizes that sustained commitment to both increasing representation and ensuring equal pay for equal work is necessary to achieve lasting pay equity.
