Abstract

This article investigates how Bolivia's extractivist economic model influences individual environmental concern, addressing a research gap focused mainly on the Global North. Using data from the 2022 "Ecobarómetro—Environmental Culture Survey" conducted in Bolivia's three largest cities, the study finds that individuals who support extractivism are more willing to accept its environmental costs if they anticipate economic benefits. Paradoxically, these supporters also exhibit higher environmental awareness, indicating a tension between economic priorities and ecological concerns in extractive economies. The findings highlight the multidimensional nature of environmental concern and suggest that economic context significantly shapes environmental attitudes and behaviors in extractivist countries like Bolivia.
