Abstract
The article examines how international alliances help firms build resilience to environmental jolts—defined as unanticipated, disruptive changes in the external environment that can undermine firm strategies—using the dot-com bubble burst as a case study. Drawing on the knowledge-based view, it argues that international alliances provide access to novel knowledge and resources, enabling firms to develop dynamic capabilities that mitigate the negative impact of jolts on performance. Empirical analysis of U.S. firms shows that a strategic focus on value creation in international alliances and greater partner diversity significantly reduce the adverse effects of the jolt on sales and profit growth, while market diversity has no significant effect. The study contributes to literature by highlighting international alliances as a mechanism for building dynamic capabilities and resilience during severe environmental turbulence and offers managerial insights on leveraging value-creating partnerships and diverse collaborators to enhance firm adaptability.
