Abstract

The article in the British Journal of Dermatology discusses the issue of melanoma overdiagnosis in Australia, particularly of melanoma in situ (MIS) and thin invasive melanomas. The study by Lindsay et al. reveals that a significant number of patients are receiving unnecessary treatments for melanomas that are unlikely to become life-threatening, leading to a financial burden on the healthcare system. The study estimates that in 2021 alone, the costs associated with overdiagnosed MIS and thin invasive melanomas were substantial. Efforts are being made to integrate novel precision medicine technologies to improve melanoma care and address the issue of overdiagnosis in the future. [Extracted from the article]
