Career and College Readiness Programming of Rural Appalachian School Counselors: A Consensual Qualitative Research Study.

Abstract
This article focuses on how high school counselors in rural Appalachia address Career and College Readiness (CCR) programming amid unique cultural and systemic challenges. Using consensual qualitative research (CQR) with 12 counselors from central Appalachian rural schools, the study identified five domains—process and intended outcomes, career and college activities, counselor knowledge of students, counselor experience, and contextual factors—that shape CCR efforts. Counselors emphasized individualized advising, experiential activities, and culturally responsive programming that considers strong family influence, geographic isolation, and limited local opportunities. Barriers included time constraints, rurality, and limited resources, while supports involved collaboration and community knowledge. The findings offer implications for school counseling practice, counselor preparation, and future research tailored to the rural Appalachian context.
