Abstract

This article investigates the emotional intelligence (EI) profiles of Chinese college students learning English as a foreign language (EFL) and examines how these profiles relate to their willingness to communicate (WTC) in English classrooms. Using latent profile analysis on data from 476 students across 11 Chinese provinces, four distinct EI profiles were identified: Emotionally Challenged (EC), Emotionally Struggling (ES), Emotionally Average (EA), and Emotionally Proficient (EP), with most students (63%) classified as EA. The study found that students' EI profiles significantly predicted their WTC levels across speaking, reading, writing, and comprehension, with the EP group showing the highest WTC and the EC group the lowest. These findings highlight the importance of addressing diverse emotional intelligence needs to enhance communication willingness in EFL learning environments.
