Abstract

The article focuses on John "Little Jack" Hore, known as "the boy missionary," who accompanied his missionary parents to East Africa in the 1880s as part of their work with the London Missionary Society. Jack's father, Edward, served as a scientific adviser on Lake Tanganyika, and the family endured a challenging 90-day journey to their mission site, where Jack's language skills and friendships with local children aided their Christian teaching efforts. Despite their opposition to the slave trade, the family maintained complex relations with Tippu Tib, a prominent slave trader. Jack survived smallpox but died at age seven from measles after returning to England, and was buried with a cloth gifted by an Arab slave trader.
