Abstract

The Hutton Junior Fisheries Biology Program was launched in 2001 by the American Fisheries Society to provide high school students with internships in fisheries science. The program aims to introduce underrepresented groups to the profession and provide hands-on experience in the field. Since its inception, the program has expanded, creating partnerships with state and federal agencies and providing internships for 793 students across the country. The program has had a positive impact on students, with many expressing their interest in pursuing fisheries-related degrees and careers. The Hutton Scholar's Summit, introduced in 2021, has also been valuable in connecting students with fisheries professionals and fostering a sense of community. The program has been praised for its support of young students interested in fisheries and its ability to provide relevant experience while also saving significant funds for college. The long-term impacts of the program are still being studied, but the stories of past Hutton students highlight the program's importance in shaping their careers in fisheries science.
