Abstract
This article explores the recent United States Supreme Court ruling that deems race-conscious admissions practices at the University of North Carolina and Harvard as unconstitutional. The decision has significant implications for higher education institutions, limiting their ability to consider race in admission decisions. However, educational research, policy, and advocacy organizations argue that race-conscious admissions are necessary to address racial inequities in higher education. The article also delves into the historical context of Black student protests in the 1960s and 1970s, suggesting that a reimagining of affirmative action policies could challenge the current higher education system's limitations and promote free access to education for all.
