Abstract

This article focuses on study skills training implemented at the University of Minnesota College of Veterinary Medicine (UMN CVM) to support first-year Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) students in adapting to the increased academic demands of their curriculum. The program includes orientation sessions, online modules covering effective study strategies and metacognition, and individualized resource referrals based on student self-assessments. Survey data from the classes of 2026 and 2027 indicate increased student confidence in study skills and awareness of available resources, with earlier and tailored interventions appearing to enhance academic preparedness and well-being. Additional support services such as disability accommodations, emotional regulation training, peer tutoring, and well-being coaching complement the study skills training to address personal factors affecting academic success.
