Abstract

This article focuses on the development, implementation, and evaluation of a diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) recruitment strategy for the postgraduate year 1 (PGY1) pharmacy residency program at University of Michigan Health, Michigan Medicine (MM). Grounded in recommendations from the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) Task Force on Racial Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, the approach included forming a DEI subcommittee, targeted outreach to pharmacy schools with high under-represented minority (URM) enrollment, and reducing bias in application screening. Following implementation, there was a 5% increase in applicants from these schools, particularly from the southern U.S., though the proportion of interviewees and matched residents from URM schools remained unchanged. The article highlights the importance of institutional support, ongoing evaluation, and the need for further strategies to enhance diversity beyond recruitment, in alignment with new ASHP accreditation standards effective July 2023.
