Abstract
This article focuses on a study examining how individual experiences, socialization, and media consumption influence perceptions of equality of opportunity across three European welfare states: Germany, Sweden, and the United Kingdom. Using cross-national survey data from the University of Oslo, the research found that personal experiences, particularly upward or downward social mobility, are the strongest predictors of beliefs about equality of opportunity, with the United Kingdom showing higher optimism than Germany and Sweden. Socialization with family and friends has a smaller effect, while media consumption, such as watching reality TV, is associated with greater perceptions of equality. The study also notes that optimism about equality of opportunity may reduce public support for redistributive policies, potentially reinforcing existing inequalities. [Extracted from the article]
