Abstract

A recent study conducted by the Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (IRCCS) San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, Italy, explored the effects of reading acceleration on Italian adult readers. The study aimed to replicate and expand on previous research that showed externally imposed time constraints, such as text fading, can enhance reading fluency. The experiments involved 90 participants and investigated the effects of continuous fading versus character-wise fading, the influence of enlarged inter-letter spacing, and the comparison of accelerated reading with non-accelerated reading. The results indicated that participants read 40% faster during the reading acceleration procedure while maintaining the same accuracy levels. Continuous fading was found to be more effective than character-wise fading in enhancing reading speed, while larger inter-letter spacing did not significantly affect reading speed gain. The study suggests that reading acceleration procedures could be valuable in improving reading proficiency in diverse populations. [Extracted from the article]
