Abstract
This article focuses on The United Church of Canada's efforts to support new "church plants" primarily composed of immigrant communities across the country as part of its strategic plan to reflect Canada’s diversity. While the church has not yet met its goal of creating 100 new communities of faith, it currently supports at least 25 groups, many led by immigrant leaders and worshipping in their native languages. These church plants vary in formality and affiliation, with some connected to other denominations like the Zimbabwe United Methodist Church, and receive funding and leadership support from the United Church’s General Council office. Examples include Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Ottawa serving Swahili speakers, Gallery of Faith in Markham engaging the Hong Kong diaspora through informal gatherings, and Christ’s Light Fellowship in Winnipeg providing support to Filipino newcomers. The initiative aims to nurture migrant faith communities while offering pathways for leaders to pursue recognized ministry within the denomination.
