Abstract

This article focuses on the motivation of veterinary public health (VPH) educators in the UK and Republic of Ireland and the challenges they face in teaching this essential subject within veterinary curricula. A survey of 23 VPH academics from nine veterinary schools revealed that while intrinsic motivation among educators is generally high, extrinsic factors such as limited student engagement, insufficient practical opportunities (e.g., placements in abattoirs), staffing constraints, and a perceived lack of value from universities, students, and the wider profession negatively impact their motivation. The study highlights the need for increased awareness of VPH's importance among prospective students, enhanced curriculum integration especially in pre-clinical years, and expanded extramural study opportunities to address recruitment shortages in the VPH sector. These findings underscore the critical role of institutional and external support in sustaining VPH education and encouraging veterinary graduates to pursue public health careers.
