Inadequate Aural Vocabulary Knowledge of High-Frequency Words: Can Mobile-Assisted Language Learning Help Solve the Problem?

Abstract

The article investigates whether mobile-assisted language learning (MALL) can improve aural vocabulary knowledge (AVK) of high-frequency English words among Japanese learners of English as a foreign language (EFL), a group that often struggles to recognize spoken words despite knowing them orthographically. A study with 33 Japanese tertiary-level EFL students showed that those using a MALL application designed for self-assessment and teacher monitoring of 1,000 frequent English words significantly improved their AVK compared to a control group. Analysis of learner data and interviews identified reduced forms in connected speech and the influence of Japanese phonotactics as key factors limiting AVK. The study highlights the potential of MALL both as a tool for enhancing AVK and for providing valuable learner data to inform targeted classroom instruction, with all related materials freely available for educational use.
