Theme Resources Realizing Textual Meanings in a Literary Text: A Systemic Functional Linguistics Analysis.

Abstract
This article analyzes how theme resources are used to construct textual meanings in chapter 1, "The Period," of Charles Dickens's novel *A Tale of Two Cities*, employing systemic functional linguistics (SFL) as the theoretical framework. The study finds that the text predominantly utilizes simple unmarked themes, with multiple unmarked themes—especially the textual + topical pattern—also playing a significant role, while marked and multiple marked themes are less frequent or absent. The analysis highlights how these thematic choices contribute to the cohesion and unity of the text, reflecting its written mode and narrative style. The article concludes by affirming the relevance of SFL for literary text analysis and suggests further research on other lexicogrammatical resources and the entire novel for a more comprehensive understanding.
