Abstract

A study conducted at the New School for Social Research in New York City developed a novel training and evaluation tool called AKIRA to assess key interviewing factors for research assistants collecting mental health data in community settings. The tool aims to improve data quality by identifying key behaviors across 10 domains and evaluating research assistants for mastery, areas for improvement, and harmful behaviors. Emphasizing cross-cultural interactions, AKIRA can be adapted to various implementation contexts to support complex work in community mental health settings. The research suggests that competency-based trainings like AKIRA may enhance data quality and research in settings where the experiences and training of individuals involved in data collection vary considerably.
