Abstract
This article focuses on the critical role of qualitative research in rural special education to better understand and improve the experiences of students with disabilities, their families, and practitioners in rural communities. It emphasizes the need for rigor and reflexivity tailored to rural contexts rather than generic methodological checklists, highlighting three qualitative tools—describing rurality, reflexivity, and basic qualitative methods—and three qualitative research methods: phenomenology, grounded theory, and ethnography. Through exemplars, the article illustrates how these approaches capture the unique social, cultural, and environmental factors influencing rural special education, advocating for ethical, community-engaged research that informs policy and practice to address systemic inequities. The authors argue that qualitative inquiry provides nuanced insights into "what," "how," and "why" phenomena occur in rural settings, thereby supporting more equitable and context-sensitive educational interventions.
