Abstract
This essay investigates artificial intelligence and its educational uses in contemporary debate. As artificial intelligence continues to grow in popularity, debate students and educators alike are turning toward the technology as a tool to advance their debating skills, research efforts, and pedagogies. To that end, this essay catalogues how artificial intelligence currently affects the benefits of high school debate in terms of critical thinking, research synthesis, and writing skills. As debate educators and students ourselves, we aim to present a take on Al's uses in debate not as unbiased detached researchers but rather as active participants with lived experiences and personal understandings of artificial intelligence's educational advantages and disadvantages. Thus, while not a conclusive dive into Al's potential, we offer this essay as a way to forward the ongoing conversation about Al's purpose and place in academic settings by broaching a subsection of academia rarely mentioned in conversations about how the tool is currently used: on contemporary competitive debate teams.
