Abstract

This article focuses on addressing the nursing shortage and increasing workforce diversity through a licensed vocational nurse (LVN)-to-registered nurse (RN) pathway program developed by AltaMed Health Services, a Federally Qualified Health Center (FQHC) in Southern California, in partnership with American Career College (ACC). The AltaMed Nursing Workforce Diversity (NWD) Program supports incumbent LVNs—predominantly Hispanic/Latino frontline workers—with financial, academic, social, and mentoring resources to advance their nursing credentials while working part-time. By reducing barriers for nontraditional nursing students and fostering culturally and linguistically competent nurses, the program aims to improve patient care in underserved communities, enhance employee engagement, and contribute to long-term economic and health benefits for participants, their families, and the region. The article highlights systemic challenges in nursing education and workforce development, emphasizing the need for flexible, supportive pathways tailored to working students with diverse backgrounds and lived experiences.
