Abstract

This article examines an undergraduate urban planning course at the University of Texas at Arlington (UTA) designed to increase student recruitment into graduate planning programs by fostering self-discovery through experiential learning. The course, called Metroplex, engaged 47 non-planning majors in five task-based episodes of urban discovery—walking, observing, encountering, perceiving, and interpreting—in the Dallas–Fort Worth (DFW) metropolitan area, emphasizing synoptic skills over integrative content. Post-course evaluations from 26 respondents indicated that 27 percent expressed definite interest in pursuing graduate degrees in planning, suggesting the course's potential to address declining enrollment in planning programs by appealing to students from diverse disciplines through active, place-based learning.
