Abstract

The article focuses on the expansion of broadband in rural India as a means to bridge the educational divide by providing students with digital tools, virtual classrooms, and quality learning opportunities. Despite significant growth in rural Internet adoption, millions of students still lack stable and affordable broadband, limiting access to updated educational content and skilled teachers. The Government of India's 2025 Union Budget prioritizes connecting all government secondary schools to broadband and establishing 50,000 Atal Tinkering Labs to enhance STEM education and digital literacy. Challenges such as high infrastructure costs, affordability, and digital literacy gaps require collaborative efforts from the government, private sector, and NGOs. The article also highlights successful Indian initiatives and global programs like the US ReConnect Program as models for improving rural education through broadband connectivity.
