Abstract
This article focuses on virtual fluency instruction to improve text reading fluency among elementary and middle school students, particularly those with reading disabilities. It outlines evidence-based strategies and key components of effective fluency instruction, emphasizing the use of synchronous virtual tutoring sessions conducted via video conferencing platforms. The article highlights the Helping Early Literacy With Practice Strategies (HELPS) program as a structured, research-validated intervention adapted for virtual delivery, detailing its instructional steps, motivational components, and use of digital tools such as virtual student folders for progress monitoring. Additionally, it discusses practical considerations for implementing virtual fluency programs, including student identification, tutor training, technology use, fidelity monitoring, progress tracking, and home–school communication. The article suggests that virtual tutoring can expand access to high-quality reading interventions, especially for students in underserved or remote areas.
