Abstract
The article focuses on the development of a dedicated Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Justice (DEIJ) competency domain to supplement the existing Competency-Based Veterinary Education (CBVE) framework in veterinary education. Convened by a group of veterinary educators from five northeastern U.S. universities in 2020, the task force created five DEIJ competencies with associated milestones to guide curriculum development and learner progression from novice to proficient levels. These competencies emphasize valuing DEIJ personally and professionally, self-awareness, understanding systemic impacts of bias, utilizing DEIJ resources, and actively advancing DEIJ within the profession. The domain aims to enhance veterinary graduates' cultural competence and responsiveness to diverse communities, align with accreditation standards, and is designed to be adaptable and regularly updated to reflect social changes and evolving veterinary medicine needs.
