Abstract
The article reviews *Sand Creek and the Tragic End of a Lifeway*, a work by Louis Kraft that examines the lives of the Tsitistas and Hinono'eino peoples before and after the Sand Creek massacre carried out by the Third Colorado Cavalry on November 29, 1864. Kraft’s narrative draws from extensive archival and governmental sources to depict the massacre and its aftermath, including the miscarriage of justice that followed. However, the review critiques Kraft’s use of the term "civilization" exclusively for Euro-American societies and his preference for English translations of tribal names over Indigenous self-designations, noting these choices as problematic and reflective of colonial perspectives. Despite these issues, the book serves as a valuable resource for both general readers and historians interested in Plains cultures and the impact of the massacre. [Extracted from the article]
