Abstract

This article focuses on the implementation of PhotoVoice, a participatory documentary photography tool, to enhance English as a Foreign Language (EFL) writing skills among Palestinian-Arab elementary school pupils in Israel. PhotoVoice invites participants to photograph and write about social issues relevant to their lives, culminating in presentations to community audiences. Guided by Palestinian college student-teachers, the elementary pupils developed their writing through scaffolding, explicit instruction, and iterative feedback, resulting in improved language proficiency and empowered self-expression. The project demonstrates how connecting language education to students’ lived experiences can foster literacy development and social awareness, offering implications for EFL pedagogy and curriculum design in marginalized contexts.
