Abstract
The article focuses on the positive impact of social-emotional learning (SEL) programs on academic performance in schools. A meta-analysis of 40 studies involving over 33,700 students from grades 1-12 across various countries found that students participating in universal SEL programs achieved better grades and standardized test scores, particularly in literacy and math. The analysis highlighted that longer SEL programs, lasting more than one semester, were more effective, and emphasized the need for school leaders to integrate SEL into core instruction. Despite some controversy surrounding SEL, many educators continue to implement these programs, often rebranding them to mitigate backlash while recognizing their importance for both academic success and overall student development.
