Abstract

The AARP Foundation Experience Corps program, launched in 1995, pairs older adults with elementary school students to improve the kids' reading skills before the end of third grade. Research shows that children who can't read at grade level by fourth grade are four times more likely not to graduate from high school. Volunteers in the program hold biweekly tutoring sessions, with 1,284 volunteers helping 3,659 kids become better readers during the 2023-24 school year. The program offers rewarding experiences for both volunteers and students, with opportunities available in 18 communities across the U.S. [Extracted from the article]
