Abstract

This article examines the national teacher shortage with a focus on the recruitment and retention of LGBTQ+ educators in K–12 public education. It highlights that while recruitment efforts for minority teachers have increased, there is a significant gap in research and policy addressing the unique challenges faced by LGBTQ+ teachers, including workplace discrimination, lack of protective policies, and hostile school climates. The article argues that improving inclusive policies, supportive work environments, and equitable preservice programs for LGBTQ+ educators can enhance their representation and retention, thereby helping to mitigate the broader teacher shortage. It also emphasizes the importance of LGBTQ+ teacher presence for positive student outcomes and calls for further research to better understand and support this underrepresented group.
