Abstract
This article focuses on the need to enhance journalism education in Canada by integrating trauma- and violence-informed training specifically for reporting on gender-based violence (GBV). It argues that journalism programs should prepare students not only to protect their own mental health and conduct respectful interviews but also to understand the social contexts, historical myths, and community responsibilities related to GBV. The authors highlight creative pedagogical approaches such as simulation-based learning and interview-based (verbatim) theatre as promising methods to build social empathy and improve the accuracy and sensitivity of GBV coverage. Collaboration among GBV prevention experts, journalism educators, and social-justice-oriented artists is encouraged to develop and implement these innovative training tools within post-secondary curricula.
