Abstract
The article reviews *Ignored Histories: The Politics of History Education and Indigenous Settler Relations in Australia and Kanaky/New Caledonia* (2022) by Angélique Stastny, which examines how history education in these two settler colonies perpetuates unequal Indigenous-settler power dynamics. Stastny analyzes curricula, textbooks, and teacher attitudes to reveal how schooling has historically enforced racial segregation, assimilation, and ignorance—termed "settler regimes of ignorance"—despite some inclusion of Indigenous histories. The book highlights differences in Indigenous populations and political contexts between Australia and Kanaky/New Caledonia, noting ongoing challenges in decolonizing education and the marginalization of Indigenous voices, especially women's narratives. It also discusses the limited impact of official reforms and the rarity of collaborative, community-based teaching approaches, raising critical questions about the persistence of colonial legacies in education systems.
