(Re)Making Sense of Place in Outdoor Adventure Education.

Abstract

This article critically examines the concept of sense of place (SOP) as a foundational curricular element in outdoor adventure education (OAE), arguing that dominant SOP pedagogy often reproduces colonial racial capitalism—interlocking systems of settler colonialism and racialized capitalism—through its historical, sociocultural, and economic underpinnings. Employing an anticolonial and antiracial capitalist theoretical framework alongside qualitative methods, including literature review and interviews with experienced anticolonial educators, the study develops an anticolonial analytical tool called the (re)making sense of place tool. This tool offers educators reflective questions to analyze and renovate SOP curricula and practices toward anticolonial aims by fostering critical historical literacy, honoring diverse student experiences, and challenging proprietary or extractive land relationships. The article situates SOP as a key site for intervention in OAE to disrupt dominant narratives and promote equity, justice, and decolonial relationships to land and place.
