Abstract

The article focuses on the role of public school boards as vital arenas for civil discourse and democratic self-governance in the United States. It highlights that school boards, composed of local community members, provide a space for transparent decision-making and respectful expression of differing opinions, serving as a model for civic engagement. The nonpartisan and hyperlocal nature of school board elections helps insulate them from broader political polarization and gerrymandering. Additionally, higher parental satisfaction with local schools compared to other institutions suggests school boards can help rebuild public trust. Overall, school boards are presented as a foundational element of American democracy that fosters community involvement and civil dialogue.
