Abstract
This article focuses on research from Ghent University in Belgium examining the relationship between articulation speed and reading speed during silent reading and reading aloud. The study involved 94 participants who completed reading tasks, articulation speed tests, and vocabulary assessments via Zoom. Results indicated that reading aloud speed correlates with talking fluency and articulation speed, whereas silent reading speed is more closely linked to vocabulary and literary knowledge, suggesting that phonological coding in silent reading generally lacks articulatory information. The findings imply that silent reading and reading aloud engage different cognitive processes, although articulatory involvement in silent reading may occur in some individuals or with more complex texts.
