Deeper Learning Through Project-Based Learning: Evidence in School-Based Agricultural Education.

Abstract

This study investigated the effect of project-based learning (PBL), the most frequently used deeper learning instructional practice, on deeper learning competencies in school-based agricultural education. Nine teachers participated in a professional development program designed to help them develop PBL unit plans that incorporated the concept of deeper learning. Of the participating teachers, one implemented a PBL unit plan while two others employed traditional lecture-based instruction. Analysis of pre- and post-test results on a content knowledge test and student survey responses revealed that PBL instruction significantly enhanced deeper learning competencies, including communication, collaboration, and academic mindset. This pilot study filled a critical gap by providing empirical evidence of PBL's effectiveness within the context of deeper learning in school-based agricultural education. The findings had important implications for career and technical education, suggesting that integrating the concept of deeper learning could foster essential skills needed for students' future careers and academic pursuits.
